Working in the twilight years before digital photography transformed how we interact with cameras, Fonaroff spent fourteen years—from 1990 to 2004—perfecting an older tradition of photographic documentation. With his Nikon Rollieflex as both tool and companion, he became a master of presence without intrusion, developing not just his 844 photographs in his own darkroom, but also an extraordinary trust with his subjects in far-flung corners of the world. His hand-coloring technique produced a photographic collection that represents a unique aesthetic visual expresssion. But each photograph was also an act of devotion, ensuring each print became as singular as the unrepeatable moment it preserved—a philosophy and approach to seeing and perception that stood in stark contrast to the emerging mass-production future of photography.
